UMTS Metrics Development Engineer
(Protocols/Applications)
Location: Schaumburg, IL, Mt. View, CA or Boston, MA

Overview

Carrier IQ is seeking experts to drive our metric definitions and implementations for our carrier applications. The position involves working very closely with our product management and application teams to determine and understand the business measures needed from our handsets. You will then determine how best to transform these business measures into a set of metric definition requirements for our customers' mobile devices. You will work with our internal teams, customers, handset vendors and mobile application developers to achieve the optimal solution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Determine and define measures and metrics for monitoring and measuring cell phone performance and quality.
  • Serve as a technical domain expert for wireless protocols and/or mobile applications.
  • Collaborate with product management and application teams to develop new metrics.
  • Work with handset vendors to understand the best methods and formats to collect the desired metrics.
  • Create collection profiles for our applications including metric manipulation.
  • Develop metric prototypes and XML drive parsing tools.
  • Develop tools and methods to help the handset certification team verify correct metric implementations.

Job Requirements

  • Deep Domain Expertise in GSM/UMTS layer 1, 2, and/or 3
  • Domain knowledge in any of the following is a plus:
    • Additional wireless protocols (W-CDMA; WiFi; WiMax; Bluetooth, etc)
    • Networking protocols (TCP, UDP, SIP, HTTP, etc)
    • Mobile Applications (PushToTalk, Browsers, MMS, Cameras, Multimedia, SMS, etc)
    • Embedded Development ( RTOS, BREW, J2ME, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Linux, PalmOS, etc)
  • Direct experience with mobile device technologies such as embedded software, tools/debuggers for firmware-based devices, handset architecture, or wireless device manufacturing.
  • Ability to understand application requirements and priorities and determine the best strategy to solve the metric definition needs.
  • Experience within a wireless service provider and building or using in-house software tools is a major plus.
  • Experience with C/C++, XML, Java, ect.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • At least 3 years of related experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or related technical discipline; additional education/training a plus.

Overview

Carrier IQ is seeking an innovative and experienced Software Engineer/Architect to spearhead the identification, design and development of critical software infrastructure components for use in enterprise analytics solutions for the wireless market. This individual will work as an integral member of the Mobile Service Intelligence Platform team to specify, design and develop critical high-performance and scalable platform frameworks and components. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, be proficient in object-oriented analysis and design using Java and grid-computing technologies in data mining.

Solutions Architect/Systems Engineer

Overview

We are seeking an innovative Solution Architect/System Engineer with deep subject matter expertise in wireless communications technologies to help shape and deliver best-of-breed analytics solutions for the wireless enterprise. As a Solution Architect/System Engineer, you will be an integral member of our product development organization and will work directly with Product Management and Engineering to elaborate industry-leading wireless analytics products from concept and prototypes through architectural design, development and deployment (full lifecycle). The ideal candidate will have deep knowledge of CDMA and/or GSM wireless technologies and experience building large-scale solutions for wireless service management and support, network planning & optimization or customer management/care domains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specific solutions/technology/product consulting, system deployment, and sales support to both internal R&D and QA, and external customers.
  • Responsible for feasibility studies, cost analysis, and technical architecture and specification.
  • Prepare in-depth and high-level technology and product presentations, white papers and case studies for field distribution and presentation to the customer.
  • Key technical contributor to customer RFI, RFP and RFQ responses.
  • Contribute to business and technology vision and direction by influencing strategies and monitoring execution of major technology endeavors.
  • Technical competitive analysis of Carrier IQ solutions and the mobile wireless analytics and telecom business intelligence market spaces.
  • Standards body tracking and involvement, especially 3GPP, 3GPP2, OMA, CDG, GSMA, OMTP and IETF.
  • May involve significant domestic and international travel.

Job Requirements

  • 7+ years of related experience in 2.5/3G mobile wireless and 10+ years of circuit switched/packet switched telecom solution development roles within telecom equipment vendors or service providers environment.
  • BS/BA (EE/CS) or equivalent.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • 3+ years experience in leading software architecture and design of web application development. (Java, J2EE, XML/XSLT, and related technologies).
  • 3+ years experience with relational database/data warehouse technologies.
  • 3+ years experience with OOAD, modeling and UML.
  • 3+ years experience in leading software architecture and design of highly-scalable service management platforms that adhere to the FCAPS model.

Solution Architect/Sales Support Engineer

Overview

The Solution Architect / Sales Support Engineer is an exciting hybrid role comprising both Systems Engineering and Technical Sales Support and interfacing closely with Engineering, Sales, Marketing and product Management functions within Carrier IQ.  This position will report into the Vice President of Sales.

You will work closely with our Sales team in Europe to determine customer needs, demonstrate Carrier IQ’s capability and engage deeply with the customers to identify detailed solution requirements and solution architectures that will maximize the value of Carrier IQ’s offering to the customer.

In addition, you will bring your extensive knowledge of the mobile industry and your software skills to bear to help specify and implement prototype implementations in order to prove the value of Carrier IQ’s solutions in the sales process and feed back analyzed customer requirements to colleagues in Product Management and Engineering.

A confident, organized, self motivating and personable individual, you will be entirely at home in giving customer presentations, demonstrating software products and engaging in technical discussions with customers. This role is ideal for someone with a strong software engineering background in the mobile industry who wants a broader role with an added commercial component.

You will have considerable autonomy within the role and must be able to work effectively with your counterparts, both in Europe and elsewhere, to deliver the right solution for the customer. Candidates must have a deep knowledge of the mobile wireless industry and be able to talk knowledgably about broad industry issues and topics.

  • Deep understanding of mobile telecoms derived from an industry player (e.g. phone maker, operator, equipment provider or consultancy) and ability to talk knowledgably on topics of current interest.
  • Bachelors required, technical degree, MBA or similar highly desirable.
  • Self starter and completer-finisher, able to be relied on to deliver excellent quality on time
  • A natural people person , at ease with customers, partners and associates
  • Resourceful with a sense of urgency & ownership
  • Familiarity with business analytics and enterprise class software solutions a strong positive.
